Many new boaters expect that once their boat is summerized, the tough part is over. But if you don’t have a marina slip, planning boating outings can be a real challenge.
Your boat is an investment, and you want to make the most of the season, right? Well, you’re in luck: there are some great boating destinations right near our North Texas Marine locations in Gainesville and Fort Worth. We have all the details on where to go this summer and how to have the most fun on the lake.
Named for its location on the Texas-Oklahoma border, Lake Texoma draws millions of visitors each year for its campgrounds, trails, wildlife refuges, and of course, boating and water activities.
Whether you’re looking to plan a camping trip and enjoy the outdoors, stay at a fancy resort, or simply spend a fun day with the family, there is something for everyone at Lake Texoma. The area of the lake nearest Gainesville is the Red River, which flows along the Texas/Oklahoma border.
Fishing: this fishing destination is known as the Striper Capitol of the World, thanks to its self-sustaining population of striped bass. The lake is also home to other types of bass, in addition to catfish, crappies and bluegills.
Equestrian Trails: 25+ miles of equestrian trails surrounding the lake, including the scenic Cross Timbers Hiking Trail, attract both horseback riders and nature enthusiasts.
Wildlife: on either side of the lake you’ll find Eisenhower State Park and Lake Texoma State Park. The lake is also part of the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, offering plenty of opportunities to spot native species, from river otters to bald eagles.
About a half hour’s drive from Gainesville is Cedar Bayou Marina and Resort, which offers cozy cabins, scenic views and outdoor activities like hiking, biking, fishing and boating. Access to Cross Timber Trails — 18 miles of nature trails perfect for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding — is an added bonus.
Another popular spot for overnights, Cedar Mills Marina & Resort offers RV rentals, as well as cottages and cabins with lakeside views. The resort is a perfect destination to observe wildlife, including white pelicans in the spring and fall.
Grab a drink or a bite to eat at the resort’s Pelican’s Landing Waterfront Restaurant, where something is always happening: the restaurant often hosts live bands, wine tastings and gourmet dinners.
Explore the trails at the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge or join a guided tour (including walking and boating tours) to view local birds, animals and plant species.
Take the family to Frank Buck Zoo, a small town zoo home to over 130 animals.
Enjoy a wine tasting on the farm at Fitzel Winery, often to the sound of live music. Hungry? The winery also offers a limited dinner menu.
Looking for a “jumping off” point to explore the area, or a fun event to attend with family and friends? Possum Kingdom Lake has all of the above. Referred to as the “Great Lake of Texas,” Possum Kingdom Lake — known locally as PK — comprises 18,000 acres of water at the base of the Palo Pinto mountains.
Fishing: largemouth, striped and white bass, channel and blue catfish and white crappie are all plentiful here, making great sport for anglers.
Hiking & biking: the aptly named Hike and Bike Trails consist of 16 miles of nature paths around the lake’s central peninsula. Rest areas throughout allow trailers to take in the sights and learn more about the area from the many informational displays.
