Pontoons and tritoons were made for lake life. In the market for a new boat and have considered these smooth-handling, family-friendly crafts? We’re happy to steer you in the right direction.
The options for pontoons are nearly endless. But our North Texas Marine staff has been around the lake a few times, so to speak. Browse this beginner’s guide to the world of pontoons to find a model that works for your needs.
The sticker price is just one factor that contributes to the price of owning a boat. It’s equally important to weigh the costs of financing, annual maintenance, winter storage, and fuel.
And don’t forget the cost of boating safety equipment, water sports gear, and any other accessories you’ll be buying for fun on the water. Once you’ve established your price range, you’ll have a better idea of where to start in your search.
The ideal pontoon boat is different for everyone. Will you be cruising and relaxing with friends and family, or enjoying a day of watersports adventures? Do you picture yourself fishing out on the lake?
Depending on your favorite on-the-water activities, you may want to seek out specific features.
For instance, if you’ll be bringing kids with you who want to swim, you may want a swim platform and ladder. Watersports enthusiasts, on the other hand, will seek out higher engine power and storage space for gear. For fishing, you’ll want accessories like rod holders and a livewill.
Pontoons are supported by two tubes, while tritoons are supported by three. The tubes also come in different sizes - standard sized tubes are about 23-25 inches in diameter. Larger-diameter tubes are 27-28 inches, allowing for more weight capacity - in other words, bigger boat parties!
Tritoons also offer a higher horsepower rating and improved performance, particularly in rough water. That means they come with a larger price tag, too.
Take time to imagine who you’ll be bringing with you on the lake, and how you’ll enjoy your time together. How much room do you need to move around? How many seats will accommodate your crew? Is it helpful to have a model with seats that can be removed to create space?
Pontoons are all about seating, and there are many types available with different layouts. You’re sure to find one that’s perfect for you!
