How to prep your boat for spring and summer

Apr. 19 2024 Announcements By DS

Spring is just around the corner, and the thought of sunny weather has us dreaming of long, lazy days on the lake. But before you start cruising, you’ll have to go over your spring boat maintenance checklist. If you need a refresher, we have you covered. Here’s everything you need to know to get your boat in “ship-shape” for warmer weather!

First things first: was your boat properly winterized, and did it receive its annual service? If you’re not sure, refer to our blog, “How Often Should a Boat Be Serviced?”

Spring boat maintenance checklist

1. Check general boat maintenance

Every boat is different, but in general, you’ll want to make sure that your engine has been checked and tuned by a professional, and that your engine belts have been inspected and replaced if necessary. Top off your oils and lubricants (engine oil, transmission and hydraulic fluids) as recommended, and inspect your impeller for wear. Flush your water system with a diluted bleach solution, using one part bleach per 150 parts water.

2. Navigation equipment and safety gear

Before you take your first trip, you’ll want to make sure your navigation charts are up to date, and that your navigation equipment is in working order: check your navigation lights, flares (they expire every 42 months), and electronics like your radar, GPS system and radios. Ensure that your dock lines and anchor lines are in proper condition, and check the pressure gauge of your fire extinguishers.

Perhaps most importantly, do you have the right number and sizes of life jackets onboard? Check that you have the best safety gear and equipment to ensure a safe boat passage. Even if you think you’re in good shape, we recommend scheduling a boat inspection with the local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. When it comes to your friends and family, safety should always come first!

3. Check your Boat’s Electric system

Water can easily corrode the plugs and receptacles of your marine electronics. Before you get back to boating, check your electrical connections to ensure they’re tight, clean and corrosion-free. If they do need a bit of maintenance, you can carefully clean terminals using a wire brush.

4. Boat Propellers and hulls

Clean your hull, and while you’re at it, check for any cracks or blisters. The condition of your propeller should also be checked for cracks, dings and other damage. Make sure your propeller is properly secured; if needed, the bearings should be replaced before you launch.

5. Seacocks

These crucial valves need to be maintained properly — if not, you could have a hole in your boat! It’s important that your seacocks can open and close freely, as they can stiffen over time. Open and close them to make sure the handles move easily, and check that the hoses and clamps in your thru-hulls are in working condition.
